All Scarlet Begonias are a TOUCH of the blues..
Very unique sound for this one. Good for a different perspective on the band. Was on a run of 1973 shows and needed to time travel ahead to see the change

a year would make in the sound —————————this has the added benefit of the full WOS. Not reviewing song by song - but really just enjoying the way the music is coming at me. Embryonic Cassidy great harmony’s between Bobby & Donna Jean! Jerry’s tunes are hot. Phil is everywhere both vocally And with his bass. Great WRS I like Donna’s stage presence for the entire show. The PITB-) UJB:) Morning Dew:)UJB:)PITB reprise - ———is the foundation upon which so many shows I saw in the 80’s revolved around the relentless freight train of classic dead tunes woven into a seamless tapestry.
To me there's always been something off about the soundboard of this show, Garcia's tone is flat and the mix lacks energy. The audience recording is where

Once in a while you get shown the light...
It's funny how, even after many years and listens, one's opinion of a show can change. That singular moment or listen where it all falls into place. I

used to be a big time hater of this show - something always felt off kilter to me. Now I realize it's mostly the 1st set that is kinda weak; I still feel that there is something off with Garcia at times on this night, but once this second set jam gets going, it is simply amazing, no doubts about that anymore. I have come to think that 3/23/74 just might be the best of the 3 times they did this. The first Playin' and the transition from UJB #2 back into Playin' are just nuts. So fibber, you'll be happy to know that the strangest of places finally looks a little more right ;)

Listen to Playin' In The Band..
They totally fucked up the beginning! And it's hilarious! They also did some great spacey stuff before Bob apologized.

Notable Firsts
This show debuted two significant new songs, the first Cassidy and first Scarlet Begonias, now timeless Dead classics.
Just Beautiful! Check out Black-Throated Wind-- one of my favorite versions ever, if not my favorite. Jerry's licks on this one are some of the best:
...
ever tasteful, fast, and with this incredible super-sweet sound. He set his guitar just perfectly... and together with the output from The Wall... well, it sounds almost like he is playing these etherial bells! What can I say, this Picks is worth it just for this song! (I haven't even heard the entire show yet). Last comment: with all of their resources, the the Dead should bring back The Wall of Sound! Bring it Back! Bring it Back Now!!
